The Office of the Historian of the City of Havana, usually identified by its
work in colonial districts, now proposes to revive an important thoroughfare
of the early 20th Century: Calle Cardenas. Cardenas connects the main rail
station (McKim, Meade and White) to the massive Capitolio Building and its
adjacent parks and plazas. The street's uninhibited display of new materials
and new designs -- above all, Catalan-style Art Nouveau -- marks it as a
landmark of turn-of-the-century civic optimism.
